A hungry bear weighing 720 N walks out on a beam in an attem

A hungry bear weighing 720 N walks out on a beam in an attempt to retrieve a basket of food hanging at the end of the beam. The beam is uniform, weighs 200 N, and is 7.00 m long; the basket weighs 80.0 N

When the bear is at x = 1.10 m, find the tension in the wire and the components of the force exerted by the wall on the left end of the beam.

a) ___N (tension)

d) What if? If the wire can withstand a maximum tension of 875 N, what is the maximum distance the bear can walk before the wire breaks? ___m

Solution

Here ,

a) let the tension in the string is T

T * sin(60) * 7 - 80 * 7 - 720 * 1.1 - 200 * 7/2 =0

solving for T

T = 338.5 N

the tension in string is 338.5 N

b) for the x direction

Fx - T * cos(60) = 0

Fx = 338.5 * cos(60)

Fx = 169.3 N

c)

Fy = 720 + 200 + 80 - 338.5 * sin(60)

Fy = 706.8 N

d)

let the distance is x

875 * sin(60) * 7 - 80 * 7 - 720 * x - 200 * 7/2 =0

solving for x

x = 5.62 m

the maximum distance is 5.62 m
