After taking proper precautions to prepare the samples for examination, graphite was revealed within its microstructure. For the gray cast iron sample, graphite existed in the form of flakes while the ductile iron had them in round shapes. Graphite flakes would cause a material to resist less distortion which makes it prone to cracks. Spheroidal graphite promotes more movement within the material and increase different properties of iron.Solution
Take proper precautions while making samples of grey cast iron and ductile iron to avoid any mixup with other material s. By carefully looking up the micro structure we can reveal reasons for their physical properties.
Grey cast iron: It has graphite flakes through out the micro structure. These flakes are formed by adding up to 3%of silicone while casting. Silicone inhibits the formation of iron carbide and the free carbon diffuse and accumulate as graphite flakes. Since graphite has brittle nature and flakes are distributed through out micro structure, grey cast iron is easily machinable as they crack along the brittle flakes. When applied with external force either it damp the energy by converting it into heat or break, but cannot be worked or forged.
Ductile iron: In ductile iron graphite is in form of nodules or spheres. Spheroidal graphite is formed by adding magnesium and less often materials like cerium, tellurium etc. Due to presence of nodular graphite help in enhanced ductility and inhibit crack formation. Even properties like elongation, impact resistance are enhanced. So it has good tensile strength and high elastic limit.
