Two converging lenses are separated by 24.00 cm. The focal length of each lens is 12.00 cm. An object is placed 36.00 cm to the left of the lens that is on the left. Determine the final image distance relative to the lens on the right.

Please provide an explanation with every step to help me understand the question better thank you.

Solution

focal length of first lense, f1 = 12 cm

let u1 and v1 are the image and object distances for first lense

1/v1 + 1/u1 = 1/f1

1/v1 = 1/f1 - 1/u1

1/v1 = 1/12 - 1/36

v1 = 18 cm

image distnace for second lense, u2 = 24 - 18 = 6 cm

f2 = 12 cm

let v2 is the image distance for second lense.

Apply, 1/u2 + 1/v2 = 1/f2

1/v2 = 1/f2 - 1/u2

1/v2 = 1/12 - 1/6

v2 = -12 cm <<<<<<<-------Answer

here negative sign indicates the final image is formed left of the right lense.
