This discussion is concerned with atomic spectropy .first of all the gas is taken in molecular state .It is taken in a small discharge tube at very high voltages .now the molecules take the electric energy and split up as atoms .these atoms again take the energy and excited while deexciting it gives atomic spectrum.

But actually the excitation and deexcitation is only by electrons by emitting photons and results spectrum (line spectrum).if the atoms are not excited by electrical or by thermal means at Ok will have an energy called fermi energy.
