If you dive to a depth of 9.0 m below the surface of a lake, A) what is the pressure due to the water alone? B) What is the absolute pressure at that depth?

Solution

(a) Pressure due to water = density * g * h = 1000 * 9.8 * 9 = 88200 Pa

(b) absolute pressure = Pressure due to water + atmospheric pressure

atmospheric pressure = 101.325 kPa = 101325 Pa

absolute pressure = 88200 + 101325 = 189525 Pa
