A 4.4-m-long pipe has one end open [and the other end closed]. Among its possible standing-wave frequencies is 58.47 Hz. The next higher frequency is 97.44 Hz. Find

(a) the fundamental frequency,

(b) and the sound speed.

Solution

a)

f1/f2 = 58.47/97.44

f2/f1 = 1.666

f2/f1 = 5/3

therefore

f1 = f0 x3

f0 = 19.49 Hz

b)

V = f x wavelength

wavelength for fundamental frequency = 4x4.4

V = 343.024 m/sec
