Describe the regulation of spermatogenesis
Solution
The process of spermatogenesis is highly regulated. Hypothalamus secretes gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the production of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and leutenising hormone (LH) from anterior pituitary. FSH stimulates sertoli cells in the seminiferous tubules of the testis to begin meiosis in the cells of spermatogonia. LH stimulates leydig cells to secrete testosterone which is required for the proper development of sperms and other secondary sexual characters. Testosterone then exhibits negative feedback mechanism on the GnRH secretion in hypothalamus.
