Are the approaches to classroom management situational? Does one approach work better that another, depending on the situation? Explain the pros and cons of using an authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative approach to classroom management. Which approach has worked best for you, as a teacher or as a student?

Solution

Approaches to classroom management are situational depending upon the behaviour of the students.Approaches vary depending on the beliefs a teacher. As a teacher managing problem behavior in the classroom can be one of the most challenging tasks. Behavior problems can range from disruption of lessons to acts of violence against fellow students and teachers. Children’s emotional setbacks and life challenges can also contribute to behavior issues at school. For instance, positive or negative reinforcement could be used to discipline the child. Permissive teaching strategies are a type of student-centered teaching, because they are focused on letting students choose what and how to learn, and are supported in their learning by the teacher. But the ultimate decisions about learning are made by the students. One advantage of this style is that it can make students feel more engaged in classroom activities. But it could also lead to a chaotic classroom, since everyone would be studying different things in different ways. The teacher can is kind of indifferent towards to the students. The authoritative style is characterized by behavioural principles, high expectations of appropriate behaviour from the students, clear statements about why certain behaviours are acceptable and others not acceptable leading to a warm student-teacher relationship.  It is an effective way to promote self-regulation in children. Though it focuses on the growth and development of children by focusing on performance ,high expectations of teachers can lead to mental pressures over students. The authoritarian style is often seen as restrictive, and students have neither a say,nor are they seen to need explanations; the teacher\'s character is sometimes perceived as being cold, even punishing. The involvement of teachers with students is low and they kind of enforce their decisions on students without even considering their opinions but this style does help in making children disciplined and follow ruless It is important for effective classroom managment teachers should use a combination of these approaches as every student and every situation in the classroom is unique and different. Depending upon the expectations and behaviour of children strategies should be developed by the teachers. And students can also use these approches to modify their behaviours and performance in class.
