Lab7b Started: Oct 26 at 10:09pm Quiz Instructions The temperature at sea level of the surrounding air will be given for 2 locations. Compute and plot the environmental lapse rate of the surrounding air (ELR) for EACH location on the given graph. Next compute and plot the below for data). You will compare the ELR to the rising parcel to determine the stability of the rising parcel. temperature change for a parcel of air, which begins to rise at each location (see Location A scenario: The environmental lapse rate is 3.8F/1000 feet. The surrounding air is 85F. The parcel of air is 85F. The lifting condensation level (LCL) is 2000 feet. The DALR is 5.5F/1000 feet. The SALR is 3.0F/1000 feet. Location B scenario: The environmental lapse rate is 3.6F/1000 feet. The surrounding air is 55F. The parcel of air is 59F. The LCL is 2.000 feet. The DALR is 5.5F/1000 feet. The SALR is 3.0F/1000 feet.

Solution

Q.5. Parcel of air at location 2 is unstable because ELR is in between DALR and SALR

reason- when ELR is in between DALR and SALR then conditionally unstable environment so if saturated air parcel at each level warmer than surrounding then unstable

Q.6. Ans- YES

When an air parcel is buoyant, it has a tendency to rise of its own just like a buoyant object in a pool of water will rise toward the surface. But just knowing a parcel is buoyant does not mean we know how far the parcel will rise. As the parcel rises, it cools at the dry or saturated adiabatic lapse rate. If this means that by rising, the parcel cools more than the ambient air, it will reach to a height where it is denser than the ambient air and will stop rising.

Q7. ans- Between 0 and 1000ft

Parcel of dry air at the surface happens to have a temperature of 59F at the surface, the parcel has a greater temperature than the surrounding it is buoyant and will start to rise. When the parcel reaches 1000 ft then temperature has gone down by 3F to 55F. At this same height the ambient air also has a temperature of 55F. The parcel is no longer buoyant and will stop having a tendency to rise.
