Describe (a) how and where the cerebrospinal fluid is formed (b) its subsequent circulation and, (c) how and where it is reabsorbed into the vascular system.

Solution

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

The CSF is a colorless liquid, which is present in the spinal cord and in the brain. It occupies the space between the middle layer of the brain cover (Meninges) and the layer of meninges which is close to the brain (pia matter). Inside the skull, it provides basic immunological and mechanical protection for the brain. It also helps in cerebral autoregulation of blood flow regulation.

Production

About 80% of the CSF is produced by choroid plexus. The choroid plexus is a network of blood vessels present in the ventricles of the brain. CSF is also produced by the cells which line the ventricles called ependymal cells, also by subarachnoid space and some tiny spaces around the blood vessels around the brain.
