1. The acceleration of the cart-pulley-hanging mass system can be determined in two ways using the following expressions: 2d(Eq. 2) Calculate the acceleration of the system. Are the results for the two equations the same? Why? (Use CGS units, g = 980 cm/s) 2. If mi was increased and m2 remained unchanged, would the resulting net force be greater, lesser or just the same? Why?

Solution

1) In order to calculate the acceleration a, we need the data for m1, m2, d and t.

Using these we calculate a.

It will be same using both the ens because both are valid.

2) If you observe the 1st equation, increasing m1 and keeping m2 same, icreases the denominator. So, the value of a is reduced.

We know, F = (m1+m2)a

so, since a has reduced, the resulting net force F will be lesser.
