3. Using spdf notation, write the electron configurations for atoms of chromium and iron, two of the major compo- nents of stainless steel. 4. Using spdf notation, give the electron configuration of vanadium, V, an element found in some brown and red algae and some toadstools. 5. Depict the electron configuration for each of the follow- ing atoms using spdf and noble gas notations (a) Arsenic, As. A deficiency of As can impair growth in animals, and larger amounts are poisonous.

Solution

3) Iron (Fe) = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2 3d^6

Chromium = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^1 3d^5 (note to half fill the d and s orbital, one electron is filled in 3d from 4s)

4) Vanadium = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2 3d^3

5) Arsenic = [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p3 in noble gas form

in normal form = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2 3d^10 4p^3

Make sure you give a thumbs up :)
