How can college students use the information on metacognition to improve their academic work? What strategies will you employ in your future academic work?

Solution

Metacognition refers to the knowledge and the control that an individual has over his or her thinking and learning. The function of metacognition is to supervise the way an individual selects and uses his memory strategies. There are three concepts included in metacognition including:

(a) metamemory: which refers to using people\'s knowledge for learning new strategies and tools;

(b) Tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon: which refers to the subjective feeling that a person has when he is confident that he knows something he is searching for but cannot recall it;

(c) metacomprehension: which refers to the difference between memory and comprehension having to do with one\'s understanding.

Metacognitive skills can help students academically by teaching them to organize the tasks they perform. These skills help a student to plan or set goals, initiate a goal process, monitor the process and manage the progress on tasks and rectify errors. Metacognitive skills affect the learning process in a way where there is limited use of cognitive resources, strategy use, and comprehension monitoring.

Metacognitive strategies support student\'s information retrieval and also serves as a learning tool that builds learning independence. When confronted with a problem-solving situation, the students can implement metacognitive strategies when they have difficulty remembering how to solve a particular problem.

Metacognition helps students: plan and organize or understand the task, monitor the work and help them self reflect and evaluate their tasks.
