Assume that 0.5000 g of your VO(PO4)(H2O)2 material is allowed to react completely with 10.00 mL of 2-butanol. What percentage of the 2-butanol material is oxidized to the 2-butanone product?
Solution
density of 2-butanol = 0.806 gm / ml
mass of 2-butanol = density * volume = 0.806 * 10.00 = 8.06 gm
8.06 gm 2-butanol = mass / molar mass = 8.06 / 74.122 = 0.109 mole.
0.5000 gm VO(PO4)(H2O)2 = mass / molar mass = 0.500 / 197.94 = 0.00253 mole.
Reaction is
2 VO(PO4)(H2O)2 + CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3 ..............> 2 VO(HPO4)(H2O)0.5 + CH3COCH2CH3
so 2 mole VO(PO4)(H2O)2 oxidize the one mole 2 -butanol.
Hence mass of 2-butanol oxidize = 0.00253 / 2 = 0.00126 mole = 0.00126 * 74.122 = 0.094 gm.
percentage of the 2-butanol material is oxidized = 0.094 * 100 / 8.06 = 1.17 %
