What advantages would there be for an organism to be able to turn on or off particular genes in response to certain conditions?
\"Want to stop a patient from getting fatter? Turn off the genethat makes fat cell\" Offcourse, this is science fiction, but this is a way howgenes can regulate there expression. The advantage is that someproteins are not necessary at a particular moment, so theexpression of that particular gene at that moment is only burningATP and Building Blocks, which you have to store somewhere as aprotein which is unused and then degraded. So is much handier toturn of the gene so that whole process of synthesis and degradationis not necessary.
